Today is Ryan's last day of the school semester, and we asked if he wanted to draw pictures to give to his teachers with thank you notes & gifts. He said yes, but only scribbled on one of the pages and didn't draw anything on the other, and said he was done. We asked who the one scribble drawing was for, and he said Ms. Jean. We said Ms. Tammy, the other teacher, might be sad if she didn't get one, too, so maybe he should draw one for her, and he ran off to draw one.
Mark suggested he try to draw a picture of Ms. Tammy and made a few suggestions, but didn't otherwise help at all. Here is Ryan's drawing of Ms. Tammy (the head is sideways). The loop on top of her head is her ponytail holder and her ponytail (definitely Ryan's idea).
After that Ryan wanted to do a drawing of Ms. Jean. Mark suggested using different colors for her different features, and helped talk him through some possibilities of things to include in the picture, but Ryan drew it all himself and it was mostly his ideas--including the squiggle in her lower abdomen that he said is her intestines! ;-) Here is the picture of Ms. Jean.
So he's now done the best two drawings he's ever done and we had to give them away! But at least I scanned them. Even though he wouldn't have sat down and drawn such recognizable drawings completely on his own, we're pretty sure he couldn't have done this a few months ago even with heavy suggestions from us. And I assume the more he practices, the more likely he will start drawing without prompting in the future. Also, the teachers were very touched to get their pictures (especially knowing he usually just scribbles), and Ms. Jean even said she thought it was one of the sweetest things she'd ever been given in her 25 years of teaching!
